The Year 2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. Yet, their prevalence has markedly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of innovative control schemes.
A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.
When these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
