Texas Top Legal Officer Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Makers Over Autism Assertions

Legal Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump seeking election to US Senate, claimed pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding the risks of Tylenol

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the makers of acetaminophen, claiming the corporations withheld safety concerns that the medication posed to pediatric cognitive development.

This legal action arrives a month after President Donald Trump promoted an unproven link between consuming acetaminophen - also known as acetaminophen - throughout gestation and autism in offspring.

The attorney general is suing Johnson & Johnson, which once produced the medication, the sole analgesic recommended for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a official comment, he claimed they "betrayed America by profiting off of discomfort and pushing pills without regard for the dangers."

The manufacturer says there is insufficient reliable data connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These manufacturers lied for decades, deliberately risking millions to boost earnings," the attorney general, a Republican, declared.

The manufacturer commented that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the reliability of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of women and children in America."

On its online platform, the company also said it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a proven link between using paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder."

Groups acting on behalf of medical professionals and medical practitioners share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has stated acetaminophen - the main ingredient in Tylenol - is among limited choices for pregnant women to address pain and fever, which can present serious health risks if left untreated.

"In multiple decades of research on the consumption of acetaminophen in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the use of paracetamol in any period of pregnancy results in neurodevelopmental disorders in children," the association said.

The lawsuit references recent announcements from the previous government in arguing the drug is potentially dangerous.

Recently, Trump caused concern from medical authorities when he told women during pregnancy to "struggle intensely" not to consume acetaminophen when unwell.

The US Food and Drug Administration then published an announcement that doctors should contemplate reducing the usage of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism in children has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who oversees the FDA, had vowed in April to conduct "a massive testing and research effort" that would identify the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But authorities warned that discovering a single cause of autism - believed by scientists to be the consequence of a complicated interplay of inherited and environmental factors - would prove challenging.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of permanent neurological difference and impairment that affects how individuals encounter and relate to the world, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, Paxton - aligned with the former president who is campaigning for US Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the evidence" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

The lawsuit aims to force the firms "eliminate any promotional materials" that asserts Tylenol is secure for pregnant women.

The Texas lawsuit parallels the grievances of a group of mothers and fathers of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the producers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

The court rejected the legal action, saying research from the family's specialists was lacking definitive proof.
