Previous Down Under Lawmaker Sentenced for More Than Five Years for Criminal Acts

An ex- Australian politician found guilty of attacking two individuals encountered via his position has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison.

Legal Proceedings

The former official, forty-four, remained in prison since last summer after the court convicted him of sexually assaulting an individual and sexually abusing another individual, in multiple events in 2013 and 2015.

The defendant acted for the coastal town of the regional area in the New South Wales legislature from 2011. He resigned as a Liberal Party cabinet member when allegations came to light in 2021 but declined to leave the legislature and was re-elected in 2023.

Court Ruling

The presiding officer the court official considered Ward's disability of vision impairment in her sentence and determined "no different consequence besides imprisonment could be considered".

The defendant, who was present via digital means at the courthouse, will undergo at no less than nearly four years in custody before he can request conditional freedom.

The court official declared the judicial system needs to "issue a clear statement to potential criminals that criminal acts like these will be faced with significant consequences".

Further Details

The judge added Ward had "escaped justice for a decade and lived freely free from a rehabilitation program or punishment for his actions during that period".

After his conviction, the individual attempted a rejected legal bid to continue in government and left office just prior to the legislature could remove him.

Representatives has stated earlier he aims to appeal the ruling.

Case Facts

His nine-week trial in the NSW District Court learned that he invited a drunk teenager to his home in 2013 and attacked him repeatedly, despite the victim's efforts to resist.

Subsequently, he attacked a young political staffer at his property after a gathering at the legislature.

The defendant had claimed the later assault didn't happen, and that the other complainant was confused about their encounter from the first incident.

However, prosecutors argued that notable parallels in the accounts of the two men, who had no connection to the other, showed they were accurate in their accounts.

Court members considered for 72 hours before announcing the guilty verdicts.

The political exit led to a by-election in his constituency in autumn, which was won by the opposition party.
