Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
