Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Unveils Marvel's Most Meta TV Show To Date
Marvel is aware that viewers might be feeling some superhero exhaustion, so they've opted to incorporate this exact concept into their upcoming superhero series.
That's right, the first trailer for Wonder Man has arrived, and it pledges a meta twist on the MCU.
The preview, which premiered on Oct. 10, also subtly moved the Wonder Man launch date back from its initial end of 2025 window into January 2026.
Why another superhero movie? People is tired of superheroes. Why watch them in the theater? Wonder Man spoke to me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reinvent the whole category of narrative.
The reporter responds: "Have you considered about the cast?"
The trailer then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the interview on his mobile device, and the preview concludes.
What We Know Regarding Wonder Man
We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a film star who transforms into a super-powered being (the hero Wonder Man).
The supporting cast features Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's manager Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed coming back as DODC officer P. Cleary.
Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Strategy
We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's evident that Marvel plans to poke some fun at itself.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the studio is all in on meta-humor. Will this approach succeed without the celebrity appeal of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? We'll have to wait and see.
