Gas Detonation Costs 3 Police Officers During Eviction Operation in Italy
Three police officers were killed and at least 15 people got wounded in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The detonation occurred as police and firefighters entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female got detained at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene revealed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.
Property Situation
The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, explained the residence was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member set off the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the Interior Minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor believed the detonation had taken place on a level above the access point and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
