External expectations Won't Enter My Head, Says Confident Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou faced jeers from Forest fans during the recent match

Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou insists that external scrutiny regarding his role will not impact his methodology.

The team remains winless in his first six matches since the coach replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground.

A section of Forest fans shouted, "you'll be dismissed in the morning", towards the ex- Tottenham and Celtic manager following Thursday's 3-2 European defeat at home to the Danish side.

Postecoglou's Response to Pressure

Postecoglou, though, mentioned that the European trophy he secured at Tottenham last season, prior to being sacked in the off-season, was evidence he does not let external factors to affect his management.

"I don't think about it," he continued. "My duty involves ensuring this football club advances and gets to a level where it can compete for things," said Postecoglou.

"Should I begin putting timelines to that or worry about what is going to happen soon then I am not fulfilling the position I have been assigned.

"I believe it is beneficial to anyone. Ultimately, I have to concentrate on the environment, the practice sessions, the style of play, and as I said recently, I am remain very, very strong in my conviction that we are close to success.

"Put it this way - I was aware I was being dismissed at Tottenham about three or four months prior to I was, but that didn't stop me from winning something."

Career Background

The veteran coach moved to Spurs from Celtic in the previous year and supporters initially warmed to the coach for his attacking style of play, with the Londoners ending up 5th in the English top flight during his debut campaign.

Postecoglou's following season was more difficult as Spurs finished fourth from bottom in the standings. He did, however, guide the team to their initial silverware in 17 years as they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Present Circumstances

Forest visit Newcastle United on the weekend (14:00 BST).

Amid the poor run of results, there is little doubt it has been a challenging beginning for Postecoglou.

And the numbers illustrate just how disappointing Forest have been since his appointment.

Statistical Breakdown

  • In Postecoglou's six matches, they have lost four times across multiple competitions
  • No top-flight team has lost as many matches as Forest since his appointment
  • They have conceded thirteen scores - at a rate of over two per game
  • Only Manchester United and Burnley have a poorer defensive per game average than Forest since Postecoglou's arrival
  • Surprisingly, it is the 35th instance in which a Premier League manager has failed to win in their first six fixtures in all competitions

Historical Perspective

Paul Jewell holds the record, having not won in his first 27 matches as Derby County boss in the 2007-2008 campaign.

Nuno was dismissed after only three matches of this season when Forest were tenth in the table. They are now seventeenth, having tied once and been defeated twice of their three domestic games under Postecoglou.

He is the initial full-time Forest manager in a century not to secure a victory in his first six matches.

Fan Viewpoint

This campaign should have been one of Nottingham Forest's finest in modern history. Qualification for Europe for the first time in 30 years, the strongest team this millennium and everyone at the club working towards the same direction.

Somehow, currently, that has all gone away. Nuno has departed, displays have been poor and on the recent evening the stadium turned on the recent appointment Ange Postecoglou after only six games.

However it's very much characteristic Forest, a team that veers from success to internal crisis like a learner driver who fails to remain in a lane.

Upcoming Challenges

Amid fixtures against Newcastle, the Blues, the Portuguese side, the Cherries and Manchester United approaching, it's very hard to say whether he can reverse the situation before it becomes increasingly toxic.

But question any fan and they'll tell you the identical thing, it's never dull at Nottingham Forest.
