Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team While Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby team selection update

Returning manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall matches, however lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions match against Australia in July.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are not included because of injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "backup".

After facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran group of centre choices. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
