Synthetic graphics claiming to portray Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered many millions of views on social media.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours
Initial fake AI image apparently displaying him led off a plane emerged within hours. This image was unpublished by any verified US channels; it was instead published on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, determining the image was generated or edited with generative AI.
More AI-generated pictures started circulating in the following hours, purporting to present additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Noticeable identifying marks on these images show they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis confirms all of these images were similarly produced using generative models.
Real Photo Released but Fakes Persisted
Donald Trump posted the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite this confirmation was made public, AI-generated images persisted online but were altered to show the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.
Online investigation reveal these altered fabrications were initially shared on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Similarly, SynthID confirms the new graphics were produced with Google AI.
